The re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan has taken a different turn following the campaign that was carried out by Rivers Elders and Leaders Council (RELEC) on Monday.
The Trent reports thatRELEC, told Rivers people to vote for President Jonathan in the presidential election.
The call was made by the body’s Chairman, Chief Albert Horsfall, while addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt at the end of the association’s meeting.
He said as elders of the land, they had decided to call on all indigenes of the state to vote for President Jonathan, revealing that the call was in line with the region’s agitation for a South-South president.
“We must not be deceived to vote against the Niger Delta project. We must take it that we are voting for the objectives which prompted our people to fight for their rights in this great country. We must, therefore, vote for Jonathan, the only Niger Delta presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections in order to sustain the aspirations of our forefathers. We are, therefore, not voting for Goodluck Jonathan per se; we are voting to sustain and maintain our deserved right as a responsible political, economic, cultural people among other groups within the comity of Nigerian ethnic nationalities,” he said.
Horsfall, therefore, call on Rivers people to go out en mass to the polling unit on election day and cast their votes for Jonathan.
“If you ask yourself why you must vote for him, say it is because voting for Jonathan means voting to sustain the century-old Niger Delta peoples’ struggle and the dividends that have accrued from it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor Rotimi Amaechi has stated that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are killed and harassed daily in Rivers state.
Recall that Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose through his special assistant on public communications and new media, Lere Olayinka, warned northerners to beware of the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Bola Tinubu and some revelations about him.
