Mauritanian court December 24 sentenced a Muslim man to death for insulting Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mkhaitir was arrested about a year ago after he had written a critical article about Prophet Muhammad and the caste system, Reuters reports. The convict challenged some of the Prophet’s actions.
The 28-year-old condemned to death insisted that his piece had been misinterpreted. A source disclosed that during the hearing Mohamed explained that it was “not his intention to harm the prophet”.
The prosecution requested for the man to be executed by shooting, which is in accordance with Sharia law.
AFP adds with reference to an anonymous source that the writer fainted upon hearing the court ruling.
The trial stared Tuesday and was already over Wednesday.
It is worth mentioning that Mauritania has not executed anyone since 1987, according to the Amnesty International.
