President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said the Operation Feed the Nation and the Green Revolution failed because they were not properly articulated.
The President said because the programmes were not properly articulated and they did not make the desired impact on food production in the country.
He spoke while flagging off the National Schools Agriculture Programme (NSAP) at the State House, Abuja.
Operation Feed The Nation
The Operation Feed the Nation was introduced by former president Olusegun Obasanjo when he was the country’s military head of state in 1978, while the Green Revolution was initiated by ex-president Shehu Shagari in 1980.
The President said: “The National Schools Agriculture Programme is not one of those initiatives that we have been having. As a nation, we have had the Green Revolution programme. And we also had Operation Feed the Nation. But at the end of the day, probably, they were not properly articulated, they just followed the political class and disappeared.
“This programme is actually designed to ensure that our students will no longer take agriculture as a form of punishment in schools but as a business and a way of making money.”
He said his administration was intent on making agriculture a very profitable business venture not only to make the nation food sufficient but to also tackle the challenges of youth unemployment.
“We need the graduates of this programme to link up with the Aliko Dangotes, Tony Elumelus and other big Nigerian entrepreneurs. This is part of our strategy to tackle youth unemployment. We are developing agriculture Super Eagles,” the President said.
